Welcome to This Girl Swims, a blog detailing my journey and lessons in wild and open water swimming.

Who am I?

I'm Becky. 40 something Mum of two and lucky enough to have had a life that has enabled and encouraged me to find a passion for the outdoors, the environment and its effect on our every day wellbeing. I work in a busy boarding school as wife of the headmaster, and everything that entails.

Why I do what I do...

Some four years ago life began to get on top of me, every time someone asked me how I was doing, I would respond by bursting into tears. I discovered Mindfulness (not Mind Fullness) and through this, the concept of our different coloured minds. Especially our blue mind.

I have always swum in the great outdoors. I am lucky enough to have been brought up in the Scottish Highlands and spend over 3 month per years still living there. I found that open water/ wild swimming (or just plain and simple swimming as I have always called it) was the most effective way for me to have a brain break from my life. I started to compete in swimrun and take my open water swimming more seriously.

Why I am writing this blog.

In 2022, I am training to swim my local loch, 10.5 miles. I have swum Coniston water (5.25 miles) and this has inspired me that everything is possible. This blog is my musings, training diary and general rant on life. Enjoy.

So this is me. My 2022 through swimming. Enjoy. Comment. Join me. Ask me questions or guide me. I'm doing this as a momento for 2022. This is my first swim of 2022. Bloody freezing (4.5 degrees) in a stunning part of Scotland. The cloud was just above me and there wasn't a ripple on the water until I got in.
